An Unknown Teenage Virgin…

An Unknown Teenage Virgin Is Given A Voice & A Vote

In the year 1809 people were preoccupied with war on the battlefronts of Trafalgar and Waterloo. Yet in the same year William Gladstone was born in Liverpool and went on to become UK’s Prime Minister, Tennyson the poet was born in Lincolnshire, and Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and became US president.

In the year ONE AD, people were distracted by a census imposed on all the World by Caeser Augustus, by the Birth of Christ JesusRoman occupation of the Holy Land, and by the building of Herod’s Temple in Jerusalem. Yet in the same year while all this was going on, Christ was born in Bethlehem! History has repeated itself in the 21st century. The celebration of the birth of Christ has been lost in the secular commercial distractions at this special time of the year.

Angels have played an important role at events in human history. ‘The Sons of God shouted for joy’ when when planet Earth was created. Job 38. 7. Angels serenaded the birth of Christ to a captive audience of shepherds. Angels will attend Christ as he returns to reign over the World. 2 Thessalonians 1. 7. We as believers are promised angelic ministry. Hebrews 1. 14. ‘Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit Salvation?’  Be encouraged, angels play a vital but unseen role, informing, providing and protecting disciples of Christ. Luke 1. 26-27. ‘The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin living in Nazareth.’ A town with a negative postcode. ‘Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?’ summed up current public opinion. But the critics were proved wrong when Christ appeared. The Nazarene proved to be the exception to the rule!

Christians are expected to be SALT and LIGHT in the most unpromising circumstances. Luke 1. 27. ‘The virgin’s name was Mary.’ A teenage virgin with no special qualifications or pedigree. An ordinary working class girl, engaged to be married to the village carpenter – Joseph.

David Wilkerson was an ordinary unknown preacher called by God to go to a city he’d never been to – New York, and rescue drug addicts. As a result, Teen Challenge was birthed and is operating today. God is still looking for ordinary people like you and me, to do His extraordinary work through us.

Luke 1. 28. ‘You are blessed among women.’ In the first century AD, and in various parts of our World today, women were despised, treated as second class citizens with no voice and no vote. But God gave a woman the leading role in the birth of the Son of Man, and it was to a woman – Mary Magdalene – that the risen Christ FIRST appeared. Mark 16. 9. Luke 1. 28. ‘You are highly favoured.’  One of the reasons Mary was chosen to carry Christ was because she pleased God. Note Paul’s confession: ‘ We are not trying to please men – but God.’ 1 Thes. 2.4 Many people in our secular World live to please themselves or please other people. Our priority in life should be to find favour with God.

Luke 1. 31. ‘You will become pregnant, and birth a Son, and He shall be called Jesus.’ With this angelic announcement, prophetic history became present day reality, because over 700 years earlier Isaiah had spoken of this event. Isaiah 7. 14. Notice the detail in the prophecy: The mother’s status – a virgin; the sex of the Child – male; the Child is named – Immanuel – meaning God is with us! What a remarkable book the Bible is! What God promises He is able to perform because He has the power and the resources. Stand firm on the promises of God for yourself! The prophets and apostles have also forecast the Second Coming of Christ throughout the New Testament. Inspite of scoffers and indifference, He will return. Are we living our lives in expectation of His coming or call? After all we want to stand before His Throne with confidence, unashamed.

Luke 1. 35. ‘The Holy One to be born in you will be called the Son of God.’ The first Christmas is about Christ’s CONDECENSION into our World. David sang: ‘You stoop down to make me great.’ Ps.18.35 Christ reaches down to our level in order to raise us to His level. Hebrews 2. 9. ‘But we see Jesus Who was made a little lower than the angels, by the suffering of death.’ In His birth, life and death, Christ totally IDENTIFIED Himself with the human race, because He is serious about having a lasting relationship with us. Quote: ‘The Son of God became the Son of Man, to make the sons of men, the sons of God.’  Donald English has well said: ‘Jesus did not become identical TO us; He became identified WITH us.’ Philippians 2. 7-8. ‘Found in appearance as a Man.’ Luke 1. 38 (J.B. Phillips) Mary’s response: ‘I belong to the Lord, body and soul, let is happen as you say.’ Obedience is costly. Mary’s reputation and her engagement were on the line. Quote: ‘The cost of obedience is small compared with the cost of disobedience.’ Mary had no role model to follow – it was a first – pioneering into the unknown. Mary’s example challenges us to break out of our cosy comfort zones! ‘Let it happen as you say.’ Mary was INVITED not ordered to bring God’s Son into the World. God fully respects our liberty of choice. Freewill carries a great personal responsibility, that will determine our destiny in this life and the next. We need God’s help in making the right choices in life. Mary embraced a radical change in her life and her future. God’s Will came before her own. Quote: ‘Everyone thinks of changing the World, but no one thinks about changing himself.’ (Leo Tolstoy)

The Christian Life is meant to be an adventure with God, not just a one off event. Mary has become the role model for every believer as she surrendered her body to the purposes of God. Romans 12. 1. ‘I urge you in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is your reasonable act of worship.’ The purposes of God will come to pass with or without our co-operation. Mary opted to run with God’s plans.  Copy Mary’s response: ‘Tell God I say YES!
