Jesus of Nazareth…

…King of the Jews
My text today is from John 19. 19. ‘Pilate wrote a sign and put it on the Cross: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.’ This sign appears in all four Gospels, underlining its importance, and demanding our attention. At the start of Christ’s trial Pilate asked Him the question: Are You the King of the Jews? Within a matter of hours Pilate had decided Christ was indeed a King, and confirmed it with s sign.
Throughout human history God has given us various signs, some verbal, others silent. Examples: One of the earliest is found in Genesis 9. 13. ‘God put a rainbow in the sky as a lasting visible sign underlining His promise never to flood the Earth again. The angel confirmed the birth of the Messiah to the shepherds with a sign. ‘You will find the Baby wrapped in a blanket, and lying in a manger.’ Luke2.12 ‘The disciples said to Christ, what shall be the sign of Your Second Coming? Christ replied: It will be as the lightning flashes across the sky from East to West.’ Matthew 24. 3 and 27.
The sign or title Pilate posted over Christ’s Cross was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. These were the the three great languages of the ancient World. Hebrew was the language spoken by the Jews, the language of religion. Greek was the language of culture, and Latin was the language of the occupying power – Rome, the language of Law and Order.
‘Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.’ This sign was a silent witness to us, revealing the true identity of Jesus Christ. God continues to communicate with us, silently, vocally in a language we can comprehend: Through the Bible, in Nature all around us, in the Heavens above us, through our Conscience, through friendships and in times of sorrow, sickness and loss.
Uncle Carl was unable to hear or speak as a result of a childhood attack of measles. But his elder brother took the trouble to learn sign language. As a result, Carl could communicate and express himself to the World out there. The smile on his face said it all! Christ has spoken to us from the Cross in a silent language we can all understand, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” He continues to speak to us if we are prepared to listen: ‘”I will teach you in the way that you should go.’ Psalm 32. 8.
John 19. 21-22. ‘Then said the Jews to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews, but that He said I am the King of the Jews.’ Pilate replied, ‘What I have written, I have written.’ Consciously or unconsciously everyone of us is writing our own verdict on Jesus Christ, during our lifetime. Once it has been written there is no changing it.
This title over the Cross dismissed the myths, make believe, human ideas and opinions about Christ’s real identity. Christ was not only a Carpenter, a Teacher, a Prophet. He is Christ the King. He reigns, He rules over suffering, death and the grave, and He wants to share His conquest with you and me if we allow Him into our lives. The title divides in two: Jesus of Nazareth expresses Christ’s humanity.
The second half expresses Christ’s Divinity. He is the God Man. Notices that: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews’ in the present continuious tense. Christ IS NOW and always will be, King!
Pilate made a mistake in limiting the reign of Christ to one nation – the Jews. The reign of Christ is universal and eternal. Isaiah 9. 7. ‘Of the increase of Christ’s government there shall be no end.’
Christ earned and experienced the office of Kingship by way of the Cross. There was no easy option in dealing with the sin question. Only as we share His sufferings and endure to the end, shall we be part of His reign in Heaven one day. We qualify to rule with Christ as we learn to die daily to self and safety.
This sign over the Cross was erected over two thousand years ago, two thousand miles from here in the UK. But it has a message for us in the twenty first century.
‘Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews’ signalled the rejection Christ’s rule over the human race. This what men and women do to with potential rivals. The title over the Cross is a sign of warning: ‘At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow in Heaven and on Earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ Philippians 2. 10-11. We have the opportunity NOW of voluntarily surrendering to Christ, or on Judgement Day, made to submit to Him. Remember, Christ reigns inspite over overwhelming opposition to His rule!
On a positive note, the sign over Christ’s Cross is one of rescue and personal salvation. Luke 23. 42. ‘Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom.’The appeal of the dying thief is of a servant to a King. I suspect it was the sign over Christ’s Head that became a saving revelation to the dying thief. In response Christ promised him a place in the King’s Garden. (Paradise)
Let’s close by asking ourselves has Christ been crowned in our lives? God help us to pray and live this prayer: ‘Lord, reign in me, now and for always. Amen.
